On June 30th, Gasol Foundation, along with the NBA Cares program, organized their second joint basketball clinic, this time in Barcelona. Around 120 children between 7 and 17 years old enjoyed a training session led by Neal Meyer, ex NBA coach, who was accompanied by Pau Gasol.
This athletic initiative was born out of an alliance between Gasol Foundation and the nonprofit NBA organization, NBA Cares, as both organizations strive to create a collaborative and charitable atmosphere which promotes values such as sacrifice, teamwork, perseverance, equality, respect, and solidarity.
“Being the best one on the court is not enough. You have to base your training on positive values which will help you overcome difficult situations later on. An athlete’s career is volatile, you must be able to learn from your losses. In order to achieve this, you must believe in yourself and your team,” explained coach Neal Meyer.
Over the course of a one hour practice session, the participants were able to learn more about the fundamentals of basketball. The activities led by Neal Meyer allowed the children to work on skills such as ball control, defense, shooting and teamwork.
Pau Gasol finished up the session with a key inspirational message for the participants: “With sessions like today’s, we want to show you the importance of hard work and perseverance in order to achieve your goals. No one decides for you, it’s up to you to work towards making your dreams come true.”
