How is the Gasol Foundation’s vision different from other movements promoting healthy living?

The Gasol Foundation places particular emphasis on the idea that a child’s environment (school, home life and community) greatly impacts his or her health and wellbeing. While our mission is deliberately open-ended – empowering young people to live healthier lives – we are currently focused on three core solution areas to combat children’s health issues:

  • Increased physical activity before, during, and after school time
  • Family and Community Wellness
  • Healthy, affordable food

How will you make an impact in these core areas, and how will you measure the Foundation’s impact?
The Gasol Foundation is working alongside experts and other nonprofit organizations to craft research-based strategies that will tackle our core areas creatively and for the long term – without reinventing what’s already working in schools and communities.

To increase physical activity in schools, physical activity in communities and access to healthy, affordable food we are designing partnership-based initiatives that will start in the United States and Spain and gradually grow over time – adapting as needed, based on successes and challenges. We will measure our impact in collaboration with these partners, and results will be published for our community of supporters.

Why did Marc and Pau choose health as the social issue for the Foundation?
Pau and Marc Gasol are not only professional NBA athletes, and Olympic champions from Spain, they are also global philanthropists. Together, and from a very young age, they have shared a passion for children’s health. Due in part to their mother working as a doctor and their father as a hospital administrator, Pau and Marc had regular access to and were educated on the importance of physical activity, healthy food, and emotional security. Some of their fondest family memories were moments spent together actively living a healthy lifestyle. They strive now, as part of their own foundation’s work, to do everything they can to ensure that same level of access and enjoyment for today’s global youth.

Why focus on youth?
While it’s essential for everyone to be physically active, focusing on school-age children could change the trajectory for the next generation. Starting in infancy, children develop the motor skills that will provide the foundation for their physical activity experiences later on. Children who move often from a young age have better developed motor skills, which positively impact the physical activity experiences they’ll have as they get older.

Reaching kids before this developmental moment is a critical key to breaking the cycle of physical inactivity. The benefits will start to accrue early on and, kids who learn to love being active are more likely to grow up to be adults who are active. If that happens, they’ll have hard-playing kids of their own and the positive cycle will take hold.
